Heidi Hussli, 47
Died September 17, 2020.
Bay Port High School, Green Bay, WI
German
Born on July 15, 1973 in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin to parents Kim Derleth and Larry Hussli is survived by one sibling, her sister Heather Hussli.
Heidi graduated from Beaver Dam High School in 1991 During a high school trip to Germany, she fell in love with Germany, an enduring love she later shared with students. While attending The University of Wisconsin Green Bay where she studied German and secondary education, Heidi again took the opportunity to spend semesters studying in Germany. After graduating in 1997, my sister returned to Germany in 1998 where she studied German and Linguistics at Univeritat of Konstanz.
While studying in Germany in 1996, she met the love of her life Amir Nouri. They celebrated their love by marrying October 10, 2000 in Konstanz, Germany. While Amir worked to complete his architecture degree, Heidi began her educational career teaching English in a private school. As their relationship grew, so did their family, adding their son Kurosh in 2004.
Heidi enjoyed working with the Howard Suamico School District for16 years, teaching all levels of German. She thrived on students’ eagerness to learn and she encouraged them every step of the way. With an open-door environment, students knew they were welcome and safe in Heidi’s classroom; she truly cared about each student and would go to the ends of the earth to help them. Heidi fell in love with the German culture, language, and people on her first trip in high school. Coupling her passion for all things German and caring for her students, Heidi knew the power of life experiences outside the classroom. She played an integral part in bringing the German American Participation Program (GAPP) to Bay Port High School, a student exchange program with the Bondenwald Gymnasium in Hamburg, Germany. Over the years she, along with colleague Julie Kramer, shared the Germany she grew to know and love by taking a total of 83 Bay Port students to Germany to study at the Gymnasium for 2 weeks and then travel the entire country. Since 2006, 232 German students have attended Bay Port High School from Hamburg.
Outside the classroom, Heidi reveled in being a wife and mother to the two men she loved fiercely and fearlessly. Amir trusted his wife, doing things like white water rafting (despite not being able to swim well!) he knew Heidi, she loved him and would never let anything hurt him. Being a mom was her most treasured gift in life; she instilled perseverance, love, hard work, kindness and so much more to her son Kurosh. A special pride resided in Heidi, seeing her son embody compassion for others, a characteristic she believed central in life.
My wife loved and supported me in everything I wanted to do. The day I met her my whole world changed and I felt complete. She was the love of my life and always will be.
My sister was a warrior, refusing defeat and fighting through any obstacle she faced. Heidi loved her family, loved challenging herself, me and others, loved traveling abroad, loved visiting national parks, and loved life. She was my sister, rock, frozen fish specialist, confidant, and inspiration.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Kim Derleth who passed away just 19 days prior, on August 29, 2020, as well as her maternal and paternal grandparents, Aunt Carol Hartl and Uncle Frank Derleth.
Heidi is survived by her husband Amir, son Kurosh, her precious dog Leni, father Larry Hussli, sister Heather Hussli, her cousin tribe, Aunts Mel and Linda Derleth, Uncle Hank Derleth and many dear American and German friends.
Her mantra in life was “Bringt die Menschlichkeit zurück” translation “Bring Humanity Back”, please honor her in trying your best to do so.

Erick Ortiz, 52
Died December 6, 2020
Milby High School, Houston, TX
Chemistry
A Milby High School teacher has died from COVID-19, according to family members.
Erick Ortiz, 52, taught chemistry at Milby High School. His family said he had been teaching in-person at the campus since everyone returned.
According to the family, Ortiz tested positive for COVID-19 on Nov. 8, contacted the district about it and was hospitalized on Nov.10. He died on Dec. 6.
“We found out the next day all of his students were in the classroom with a substitute teacher,” said Ortiz’s sister-in-law Laura Heredia. “We’re not sure they were notified.”
His family wonders whether Ortiz contracted the virus while at school, and whether the school has been following proper notification protocol.
Heredia said HISD has yet to respond to their requests for copies of any communication that was sent to parents, student and staff about Ortiz’s positive case or previous ones.
Friday, HISD provided ABC13 with a copy of an automated callout that was placed on Sunday, Nov. 8, alerting Milby High School that a person at the school had been diagnosed with COVID-19.
The district said they are not allowed to identify the person. Milby High School roughly has about 1,800 students, teachers and staff. On average, district-wide, 40% of students are doing in-person learning.
HISD released the following statement regarding Ortiz:
“The Houston Independent School District is deeply saddened to learn of the death of one of our beloved Milby High School teachers. We extend our sincere condolences to the teacher’s family, friends, and students. Counselors have been made available for as long as they are needed, on campus and virtually, to provide support to students and staff.”
Ortiz was a married father of three children. He taught in the Houston-area for 23 years. Heredia says her family will continue to press for answers.
“It’s been heartbreaking. This has broken the whole family,” she said. “He was a wonderful father, wonderful husband, a wonderful brother-in-law. He was an awesome teacher.”
Heredia has set up a GoFundMe to help her sister and her family.

She was stubborn and never gave in when she set her mind to it, and would do whatever was necessary to help her students, family or friends succeed. There were never any strangers in Teresa’s life, and you could always confide in Teresa, she had a caring heart and was always there to listen. Her smile was enough to light up the darkest corner, and her laugh was irresistible. If her grandchildren were playing ball, or in any activity, she was their biggest fan, usually in the loudest hat! Her sister and her daughter were her favorite running buddies, and together they would go shopping, eat out, and any number of other activities. A Christian by faith, she and her family were members of the Calvary Assembly Of God, making church dinners and serving in the Missionettes, and involved in Ladies Ministry. Her health had been difficult recently, and the Lord called this wise and wonderful woman home from her many labors on Friday, August the 28th, 2020 in Tahlequah, OK. She was 62 years old and leaves behind the many lives she has touched in the short time she was with us.
She is preceded by her grandparents, Curtis and Ollie (Blackhaw) Chaudoin, and Edward Carmack and Odra Dause, her parents, Benks and Geneva Chaudoin, and her beloved uncle Jack Chaudoin.
Her memory will be lovingly tended by her husband Danny Horn of the home in Park Hill, her daughter, Dani Horn-Haggard and husband Marcus of Tahlequah, OK, and three step children, Cheryl Horn and companion Bill Campbell of Tahlequah, OK, Janna Horn and companion Scotty Thompson of Tahlequah, OK and Brandon Horn and wife Tiffany of Ft. Gibson, OK. She leaves her sister, Judy Carroll and husband Danny of Tahlequah, OK and her seven step grandchildren, Derrick Campbell and wife Morgan of Milwaukee, WI, Taylor Osborn and Richie Osborn both of Tahlequah, OK, Kaylee Williams of Ft. Gibson, OK, Talon Osborn and Brynlee Coppin both of Tahlequah, OK, and Kyra Horn of Ft.Gibson, OK. She also leaves one nephew, Rodney Carroll and wife Danielle of McKinney, TX and one niece, Rhonda Carroll of Tahlequah, OK, as well as many cousins, and a host of students, friends, and church family far too numerous to mention.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Funeral services for a Midlands mother and her daughter were held Saturday after the two women died of coronavirus weeks apart.
A remembrance for Shirley and Demetria Bannister was held at Bible Way Church of Atlas Road.
“Our hearts are broken forever; tears have been falling for so long,” Dennis Bell, one of their family members said. “When we think of your beautiful faces, it all seems so wrong.”
Bell joined a number of other loved ones to speak on the lives of Shirley and Demetria Bannister before a masked audience, spaced apart for social distancing.
“Nothing is the same now and we doubt it ever will be,” Bell said.
Demetria, known as “Demi” among her colleagues, was a third-grade teacher considered the “life of the hallway” at Windsor Elementary in Columbia.
“I can honestly tell you that she was one of the most passionate people and she had a purpose and… her purpose was children,” Windsor Principal Denise Quickel said.
Demetria’s mother Shirley was an educator and a nurse who led the Midlands Technical College (MTC) nursing department for the past seven years.
“She remained humbled; she remained committed to students; she remained committed to service,” MTC President Ronald Rhames said.
Now that two women have been laid to rest, family and friends are trying to find hope in the pain.
“If there is a silver lining in any of this, and I believe there is, it is that Shirley and Demetria are back together again,” St. Mark Baptist Church Pastor Secaida Howell said.
An upcoming MTC blood drive was named in honor of Shirley Bannister for her service to the Red Cross and efforts to help the organization increase blood donations.

Ash Friederich, 40
Died October 31, 2020.
Tolleson Union High School, Tolleson, AZ
Football coach
People article:
A beloved assistant coach from an Arizona high school left his community reeling after succumbing to coronavirus complications this weekend.
Ash Friederich of Tolleson High School died on Saturday evening after a bout with the virus, according to ABC affiliate KNXV. The 40-year-old coach had been a part of the school’s community since 2016, when he was hired as an English teacher.
“I don’t know what to say,” Scott Richardson, head baseball coach for Tolleson High, told the news station. “[He was] just your typical sports nut that you could probably just sit next to on any Sunday at a sports bar and just start talking sports.”
Friederich quickly became an assistant coach for girls softball and basketball in 2017, then served as a junior varsity coach for girls softball in 2018. This year, after serving as an assistant coach for freshman baseball, Friederich was named coach for the school’s freshman and sophomore team.
“Ash was the guy that always had a smile on his face,” Richardson told the Arizona Republic. “He played the role of good cop to a T, always there to add an encouraging word or pick up a player after a bad game.”
According to Roy Lopez, who runs the school’s football program, Friederich became sick three weeks ago. Lopez told the Republic that Friederich had taken two coronavirus tests but each came back negative, which he says were ultimately false negatives.
The FDA says false-positive results are possible and may occur for various reasons, such as an antibody test detecting a different coronavirus other than the one causing the current pandemic (SARS-CoV-2).
“He progressively got worse,” Lopez told the Republic. “We had already quarantined. Then, after a few days, he was feeling better.
“He had a high respiratory infection on Friday and was admitted [to the hospital],” he added.
It is unclear whether Friederich had been diagnosed with an underlying condition, which can heighten a person’s risk of serious coronavirus symptoms.
According to a New York Times database, Arizona has experienced 6,022 deaths and 249,822 cases attributed to coronavirus as of Tuesday afternoon.
The country as a whole has seen 231,990 deaths and more than 9.4 million cases.

Samara Lyric Rand, 25
Died November 19, 2020.
Holmes County Central High School, Lexington, MS
English
Adams County Coroner James Lee said, “COVID-19 has taken on a new meaning” when he lost his 25-year-old granddaughter to the disease Thursday morning.
“COVID-19 has left a big hole in our hearts,” Lee said.
Lee said his granddaughter, Samara Lyric Rand, was pregnant with a now 3-month-old child when she first contracted the virus and had been fighting serious lung problems since then.
Lee said Rand grew up in Holmes County and was a resident of Lexington (Mississippi). Rand graduated summa cum laude from Alcorn State University in Lorman and immediately decided to become a teacher, Lee said.
Rand was in her second year of teaching for Holmes County School District and was just getting her classes ready for virtual learning before she became sick, Lee said.
“She was a perfectly healthy young lady,” Lee said.
Approximately three months ago, Lee said Rand started experiencing, shortness of breath. Her breathing worsened to the point of doctors delivering her baby so she could be treated.
“She went on a ventilator and never came off,” Lee said.
Lee has been reporting COVID-19 deaths in Adams County since the start of the pandemic. At the loss of his young granddaughter, Lee said it is clear that the virus does not discriminate based on age.
“My message to young people, anyone her age or older, is that this pandemic is real and you need to be very cautious as how you adhere to the (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines. Regardless of what anyone says, it’s real and you need to protect yourself. More young people are dying from the disease now, nationwide.”
Lee said the family would have a private funeral on Wednesday and said he is grateful to everyone who has reached out to his family and him.
“I thank everybody for their concern and the love they’ve shown to me and my family. Be safe,” he said.

Substitute Teacher
George R. Yarbrough (Mr. Ron), age 74, passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, of COVID-19. He was born on April 26, 1946 in Conway, Ark. to the late George H.S. Yarbrough and Lois I. Yarbrough. He was also preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Ron graduated from Arkansas State Teachers College (now the University of Central Arkansas) with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and attended the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock for two years, after which he embarked on a nearly 30-year career in nursing home administration. After retiring as a nursing home administrator in 2003, he returned to Arkansas, where he worked for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and the Conway (Arkansas) Public School System as a substitute teacher. In 2006, he discovered his true calling, substitute teaching in the elementary schools in Conway. During the summers, he traveled Arkansas in an attempt to visit every State Park. He managed a personal visit to 50 of the 52 State Parks.
The Conway Public School System has a contract with Kelly Services to provide its substitute teachers. In 2019, Kelly Services honored Ron with their Arkansas Substitute Teacher of the Year award, an honor he accepted with great pride and humility. During his years of substitute teaching (mostly in elementary schools) he touched the lives of innumerable children and their parents. He (and Mr. Moose-inside joke) earned the love and respect of those children. He was a favorite of the elementary school administrators and teachers.
Ron was a man of faith and a member of the Central Baptist Church in Conway.
Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there will not be a public memorial service. At a later date, the family and Ron’s close friends will gather to remember him, miss him and share their many happy “Yarb” memories and stories. All who knew him were touched by his love and concern for them. He loved all the children with whom he had the honor to serve as a substitute teacher.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a donation to Theodore Jones Elementary, his primary school over the years, for their Child Welfare Fund or their Sunshine Fund for teacher needs and/or the Arkansas State Parks.

In his senior year, he was awarded 1st band, 1st chair at All-State, declaring him as the best Tuba player in the state, representing SHS and his family with pride.
Jimmy continued education at UCA in Conway, where he participated with the UCA Wind Ensemble, UCA Marching Band and various other ensembles. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education in 1991. His career as a band director began with a one-year position at Stuttgart Middle School, then one year at Gillett. From there, he served six years at Eliza Miller Junior High School in West Helena. Next came fifteen years as Director of Bands for Brinkley Schools. Jimmy was currently teaching Kindergarten through 6th grade music at Palestine-Wheatley School Elementary.
Jimmy began dating Angela Kaye Senko in 1984. They were inseperable. Wherever you saw one, you saw the other. After ten years and 16 days of dating, Jimmy married the love of his life in a nuptial Mass at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Although they had no children of their own, as teachers, God blessed them with hundreds of Hynum Babies of all ages who filled their lives with love, joy, and laughter.
Jimmy was an active member of the St. John’s Catholic Church in Brinkley. He served as financial secretary in the St. John’s chapter of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Arkansas School Baned and Orchestra Association. While living in West Helena, he and Angie were active in the Lion’s Club. Jimmy was currently the interim board president of the Monrow County Human Development Center. He had a strong interest in law enforcement which led him to go through training and volunteer as an auxiliary deputy for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department. When Angie asked why, Jimmy said he just wanted to be there to help people in any way he could. Jimmy was compassionate and had a true heart for helping people of all ages.
Jimmy’s hobbies included playing his tuba and euphonium, reading, riding his Spyder, volunteering at Ducks Unlimited events, and spending time with his Love and their zoo–-Mowgli, Ruby, and Mr. Kitty.
At the age of 53, he passed from this life on October 29, 2020 at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Little Rock. He was preceded in death by his parents Emmett “Bud” Hynum, Jr. and Mary.
Clarkster Toure
Died November 14, 2020.
Mesquite Independent School District, Mesquite, TX
Bus driver
When asked to describe his mother, one of the first things Frederick Cohen will tell you is about her love for kids.
In addition to raising her five boys, Clarkster Toure went to work every day for 12 years to drive a bus load of kids to and from school.
Most recently, she drove for Mesquite ISD.
It’s a job Cohen said his mother loved.
“She spent her life trying to do the best she could and be the best that she could be, and she accomplished that,” said Cohen.
But at the end of her life, the strength she showed throughout it proved no match for COVID-19.
“My definition of my mother is that she was an angel on this Earth that went back home. That’s it,” said Cohen.
Cohen said his mother first went to the E.R. at the beginning of October after feeling sick on a weekend away celebrating her 10th wedding anniversary.
“She was coughing real bad,” said Cohen.
Toure tested positive for the virus.
She was given something to treat asthma that previously hadn’t been much of a problem for her and was sent home.
She’d go back twice more before she was admitted.
“It messed with her lungs. It took her breath away,” said Cohen.
About a month after her diagnosis, Cohen said his mom called him from the hospital telling him to prepare her room for her return to home.
She was optimistic she was on the mend.
Then she took a turn and was placed on a ventilator.
Within days, she was gone.
“That’s the hardest thing,” said Cohen. “People telling you that you can’t see your mother, that it doesn’t matter that you’re her child.”
Cohen said they believe Toure got the virus from a friend at church.
He said though she’d initially been skeptical of COVID-19’s danger, she’d been careful on her bus route each day wearing both a mask and gloves.
Their family hopes others will do the same.
“Even now, she’s watching over people, and she’d want everybody to be safe, stay cautious and remember that COVID is real,” said Cohen.
Due to HIPPA regulations, Mesquite ISD said it couldn’t comment on Toure’s death.
The district released a statement:
